Plant reproduction and propagation

Microscope Slide Set - Plant Reproduction and Propagation

Plant reproduction and propagation

  • Plant reproduction generally occurs, when an egg cell (female) and a sperm cell (male) meet.
  • With the exception of bacteria and some unicellular algae which reproduce by division (that is by dividing in two parts), plants have developed many specialized methods and structures to allow both the female and male cells to get together to reproduce.
  • In most cases the female plant cells quietly wait until the male cells come to them.
  • These male cells, in form of spores or pollen, are brought in contact with the female cells by insects, such as honey-bees for example, or by wind or water.
  • This microscope slide set will assist you in learning to recognize eggs, pollen granules containing male cells and spores of many different plant types, each one with its own different way of propagation.
