Microscope Slide Set - Cell Development and Reproduction

Cell development and reproduction

  • Cells can reproduce by dividing in two parts through a mechanism which is not as simple as one might imagine (mitosis): the two newly-formed cells can either be equal to their parent cell or, undergoing a transformation, they result in totally different cells.
  • Take for example the egg cell, which after fertilization by the spermatozoa, gives birth to all the different cells composing the body: from those of the brain to the liver, from those of the skin to the stomach, or in the case of plants, to the cells of the vessels making the lymph circulate, to the cells of the wood or cork, and so on.
  • Cells can either maintain their original character, or become totally different elements: their destiny is "written" in fact, in the chromosomes, the macroscopically elongated bodies formed by special molecules such as DNA for example, found among all dividing cells.

This set of ten prepared slides (subjects are shown below) come in a wooden slide box with ten blank slides and cover slips.

1. Mitotic stages in red bone marrow.
2. Mitotic stages in testis of mouse t.s.
3. Sea-urchin cleavage stage.
4. Growing egg in ovary of bird t.s.
5. Plant mitosis, l.s. of onion root tips.
6. Plant stages in red bone marrow.
7. Growing tissue in stem apex l.s.
8. Growing leaf tissue in shoot apex t.s.
9. Plant meiosis t.s. young Lilium anthers.
